The family of Tigran Gambaryan threatens to sue Ukrainian doctors, claiming that Gambaryan’s health in the course of his six-month detention in Nigeria deteriorated due to medical inattention. Holding of Nigerian Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan for alleged $34 million fraud that has spanned six months, and his health is deteriorating. 

Authorities in Nigeria arrested Gambaryan for alleged wrongful activities such as money laundering, speculations with foreign exchanges, and evasion of taxes while working with the global crypto exchange Binance. But what is happening now, named by Gambaryan as medical negligence, has been making the Binance executive’s condition deteriorate, according to the family. Their statement said, “He cannot even walk due to the untreated herniated disc or spinal injury, and the prison does not want to give him a wheelchair either.

Growing medical complications for Binance Executive

Because of his immobility, doctors put him on blood thinners to prevent blood clotting, similar to Gambaryan’s case. The family has also accused the Nigerian authorities of denying his lawyers access to visit him for twenty days, starting from July 26 to August 14. “They said such restrictions are ‘alien to the Nigerian constitution and the laws that govern the prison where he is detained.”

Further, the authorities allowed a five-minute visit to Gambaryan’s legal team for trial and didn’t allow him to enter again. Also, according to the family, due to the lack of a wheelchair and no support from any embassy in Russia, Gambaryan cannot visit the United States embassy for any support. The appendices state that Gambaryan contracted severe, untreated malaria and pneumonia and recommend the removal of his tonsils.

Before detaining the man, the Nigerian authorities first summoned a Binance representative to a meeting. He also faces accusations related to Binance. While in detention in Nigeria, authorities forced him to relinquish his passport and relocated him to a ‘guest house. The family also claimed that the deliberate denial of access to Gambaryan’s medical records by his defense team and the American Embassy led to a bench warrant being issued for the arrest of the Nigerian prison doctor.

Planning for crypto exchange licensing

During such legal strife, Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will provide licenses for cryptocurrency exchanges. In a recent Bloomberg interview, SEC Director-General Emomotimi Agama stated, ‘As a crypto and fintech enthusiast, I am certain this will happen more often than we can imagine. In the last several years, people have recognized Nigeria as one of the fastest-growing crypto-economies.
